Biomechanics mini-workshop with design students from Aalborg University

Design students visiting NYC from Aalborg stopped touring the city long enough to attend a mini-workshop on biomechanics that I was asked to conduct. The talk was relevant to their final school project, which looked at physical aspects of design. The workshop covered basics in biomechanics, and a few demonstrations. For example, holding a 5 kg weight with a bent elbow, as shown here, can easily require 50 kg of pull by your biceps. The forces within your body, for even simple tasks, are surprising. (Not sure why this isn’t basic knowledge delivered to all design students everywhere.)

Thanks Kaare Eriksen for inviting me, and Jens Birk for hosting us at the Danish Consulate in New York.
