In Game 6 of the World Series last night confusion erupted over Washington Nationals’ Trea Turner being called out on a run to first base and advance to second after the throw to first was dropped. He seemed to be safe and okay to advance. The problem: the rules of Major League Baseball state that a batter must run outside the baseline, in foul territory, for the last half of his run to first base. He didn’t do that.
Here’s an illustration of that rule from the Baseball Field Guide, a book that Paul Hamburger and I wrote and illustrated, explaining the rules of Major League Baseball.
